EDERNA

Fabrice Gascons Viladomat is a French Entrepreneur. He studied at the Paris Institute of Technology for Life, Food & Environmental Sciences where he received a PhD for his research on the recovery of aroma compounds from the food industry wastewaters using membrane extraction technologies such as Liquid-Liquid Membrane Extraction and Vacuum Membrane Distillation.

In 2007, he has co-founded EDERNA, a company dedicated to the development of processes based on Engineered Osmosis for the Food Industries. He is the current CEO of the company and splits its time between Europe and North America to promote its breakthrough technology.

Use of Engineered Osmosis Technology: A Solution for Liquid Concentration in Mild Conditions

Engineered Osmosis processes allow achieving high levels of retention of flavor, aroma, color and molecular activity (antioxidants, vitamins…) while offering a low environmental footprint. EDERNA has developed a proprietary technology called evapEOs® which is an unique combination of Reverse and Forward Osmosis. A huge reduction in energy costs (30-98%) is possible compared with thermal technologies since an evapEOs system consumes barely 150 kWh/per ton of water extracted while thermal evaporation systems consume 200 to 1,000 kWh/ton. Using evapEOs upstream of spray drying (consumes up to 1,500 kWh/ton) and lyophilization (up to 5,000 kWh/ton) also provides massive energy and cost savings and dramatically increases throughput of existing dryers.

Depending upon the fluid to be processed, concentration levels of up to 65% soluble solids are achievable. Juices, extracts, dairy products and high quality, innovative products have been successfully produced using evapEOs.
